Livestock Importance: Goats and sheep are crucial assets for sustainability, particularly in difficult times.
Community Support: Experienced members should teach farming skills and manage farming and livestock activities due to the lack of experience among many community members.
Land Use Strategy: Rather than dividing farmland individually, the entire mountain will be treated as a single farm, with ownership represented by shares. 1 share equals 1 Kanal of raw land.
Collective Development: A "the kedaar" system will be used where a committee develops the land (farming, livestock, infrastructure) to ensure maximum usability and income generation.
Income Distribution:
The focus is on having homesteads that are just about big enough to be able self sustain on their own, setup in a neighborhood environment.
A typical homestead consists of two conjoined plots of 4800 sq’ each bringing the total to 9800 sq’ of which the first half’ is for residential use, where the maximum built up size of a home is 2400sq’.
The second half is part of the green belt managed by the community and the two main uses of this is to act as a buffer between the home below as well as a source of agro income.
All remaining land that is not utilized as a homestead is then shared between all the residents based on how much they have invested in to it.
The land is to be treated as one large 100 Acre Farm under the management and care of committee of experts from within the community; this will ensure that land is utilized as per its natural contours, water availability, direction to sun, access etc.
Infrastructure
Shekhwal Farms is inherently a crowd funded project, which means the services and utilities needed need to be funded by the residents with time as needed and under consultation with each other.
The design, for this stage is based on a decentralized infrastructure mechanism, where the residents decide for themselves on how many KVA their solar system should be, how deep they need the boring done, how large their septic tank and soak pit will need to be etc. generate their own funds and get it done as per need.
